What is TangoRojo?
The TangoRojo festival is a celebration of all the aspects of Argentine tango culture; film, music, song, dance and visual arts, and, above all, the unique passion it inspires.
Why yet another festival?
Why? There are countless Tango festivals held around the world every year, ranging from small-scale events to huge, 7-day festivals. Despite this ‘richness’, these festivals are very homogeneous, very alike to each other and formulaic—they consist of little more than several days of numerous intensive workshops, followed by milongas wth performances. All other Tango activities are often no more than an afterthought.
Supporting the arts
We felt there was no need to replicate this formula and create yet another festival similar to so many faceless others. We enjoy artistry in its multitude of levels and varieties, but want to showcase and support these arts in the way they deserve, for fear of losing them forever. Art left on its own is easily overlooked by other events and never reaches its intended audience.
By ruthlessly seeking out new and niche artists and then selecting the best efforts in their various fields of excellence, we organise a festival around them from the outset, not just as a gimmicky add-on. In this way, the festivals we organise are unique and substantially different from their peers, they reward artistry and support the artists and their continuing hard work, further exploration and advances in their chosen art forms.
We hope you will come and see these arts for yourself, enjoy them as we do, and support them so that we may have a thriving art scene around the dance of Tango itself.
The festival itself
Spanning four days from the 17th to the 20th May 2012, we are hosting an art exhibition by a featured tango painter, musicality, theatre and tango workshops, a night of tango theatre and a screening of a feature-length tango film.
For your dancing pleasure, there is live music every night brought to you by diverse tango musicians and singers, as well as some gorgeous performances, and a few surprises!
With that said, we look forward to seeing you at the festival this year!
Rojo y Negro, festival organisers
Rojo y Negro tango club, London
The TangoRojo festival is organised by Rojo y Negro, a school and club of Argentine tango, based in Central London.
We organise many events throughout the year, bringing you artists, tango teachers of various backgrounds, coming from distinct schools of tango, each with their own feel, performers, musicians and many others. Even if you can't make it to the festival itself, we invite you to our regular weekly classes—covering all levels of tango—our Thursday night weekly milonga and many special events we hold throughout the year. Visit our web site for more information, to get in touch with us, or to subscribe to our mailing list to keep abreast of special events as we announce them.
